HOW I BECAME A CANNIBAL : The Escalation of a Lie
The first time Bill Brown told his cannibalism story to the police, it was during an interview with Michigan State Police Detective Don Brooks and Ingham County Prosecutor Donald Martin. Their initial discussion took place "off the record." The recorded interview that took place afterwards, is what Detective Brooks referred to in his own words as a "condensed" version of the initial discussion. According to Detective Brooks, the entire interview of a murder suspect's confession, was not recorded by the detective, Read how Detective Don Brooks already knows the course of Bill Brown's story. Obviously, the story they wanted to present was already crafted during their initial discussion...OFF TAPE.
The second time Bill Brown told his cannibalism story, it was to a Grand Jury. Feeling more confident in the acceptance of his story, Bill Brown adds another dimension to the lie, stating "I think he said it tasted like sweet pork."
In his final performance, Bill Brown took the witness stand at my trial and gave the jury a campfire story that had been fine tuned over a years worth of police interviews and prosecutorial coaching. Bill Brown had a prosecution and the media eating out of his hand. By the time of my trial, for the prosecution and media to save face, anything Bill Brown said HAD to be true, or it was ALL LIE.
Bill Brown testified that his first "confessing" interview to Detective Brooks and Prosecutor Donald Martin, he knew he was a suspect in the disappearance of Rose Larner and he expected to be charged with murder soon.
The following are excerpts taken from Police Reports drafted by detectives prior to Bill Brown's "confession." This is all information that Detective Brooks and Prosecutor Martin would have questioned Bill Brown about in their "off record" discussion.
MINGON DUNN was interviewed at the State Police Post.
MINGON stated she started dating BILL BROWN in 1990. MINGON and BILL BROWN have a child together.
BILL and MINGON had several conversations about BILL'S involvement with ROSE'S death. She was never left with the impression BILL was joking. She definitely believed BILL had some involvement with killing and or disposing of ROSE. Inside, MINGON did not want to believe BILL would do anything like that.
One version MINGON heard from BILL was, he had been contacted by KEHOE. BILL was taken to a house. ROSE was tied up and locked in a closet. ROSE was begging BILL for help. BILL thought he had the choice of killing KEHOE and being arrested for KEHOE'S murder or going along with KEHOE. KEHOE then stabbed ROSE and gave the knife to BILL. BILL then stabbed ROSE. They cut her up, boiled her and ate some of her flesh. It took three hours to clean the house. BILL did not say what house.
Another version was, BILL said he was drunk and chopped ROSE up. They then ate her.
MINGON doubts that BILL knows MINGON'S true feelings about BILL'S involvement in ROSE'S death. MINGON is convinced BILL is involved. She was led BILL to believe differently. MINGON now fears what will happen to her when BILL finds out she suspects he actually did have something to do with ROSE'S death.
During Bill Brown's initial "discussion" with Detective Brooks and Prosecutor Donald Martin, Bill Brown would have been questioned about his previous statements that he killed and ate Rose Larner. Everything Bill Brown accused me of, is what he himself bragged about doing. When he was confronted with his own admissions, he simply said, "Oh no, that wasn't me, that was Kehoe who did that." And Ingham County Prosecutor Donald Martin...who knew that he'd receive all the free media attention he got. while he was fighting his loosing battle for reelection...backed Bill Brown in order to close the case. There is no mountain of evidence against me...there is Bill Brown, who received a one year prison deal to testify that I killed and ate Rose Larner. A one year deal that I was offered by Prosecutor Martin but refused to accept.
Why did I refuse to accept their deal? Because nothing they were saying was true! Yes, they've got all those witnesses who said that Bill Brown told them he did this, or he did that, but Bill Brown never did any of those things. He himself told the jury during my trial that he thought of it as a status symbol when people he had killed someone. And you can scour through every page of transcript from my trial and you will not find one instance of me testifying that Bill Brown murdered Rose Larner.
Had the Prosecution presented all of the evidence to the jury and not backed Bill Brown so fervently, I wouldn't be in prison right now...labeled as a cannibal. The authorities gathered more evidence contradicting the story they presented than evidence to support it. They just buried all the contradictory evidence and threw the authority of their office behind Bill Brown.
I don't blame Bill Brown as much as I blame authorities that used him to manipulate a case for their own personal gain: free campaign attention, selling their story for money, promoting their personal P.T. business. Bill Brown was just trying to "save his own butt." Which wasn't difficult, considering that Bill Brown testified that when it came to his dealing with the police, he became good at what he did.
